Experience Faroe Islands

Mykines | The Puffin Island Tour

A favourite amongst travellers to the Faroe Islands is to visit the westernmost island of Mykines, known for its large seabird colonies, particularly the puffins. Mykines is staggeringly beautiful and deserves its spot as the most sought-after destination in the Faroe Islands. To fully experience the island’s remarkable nature and distinctive way of life, we recommend joining one of our puffin tour options. This ensures a comprehensive and personalized day-tour in a comfortable and hassle-free setting.

Unbelievable Birdlife

Designated as a Ramsar site for its avian diversity, Mykines hosts an impressive array of birdlife. The island is most renowned for its puffin colony, arguably the largest in the Faroe Islands and possibly the biggest in the world. Our journey takes us directly through this thriving bird sanctuary. The village that once inhabited almost 200 people is now reduced to around a dozen living year-around inhabitants. Nevertheless, the charm of the village remains intact, with its impeccably kept homes, traditional turf roofs, and a delightful palette of colours.

Intinerary:

We set off from Tórshavn at 8:00 AM and head towards Sørvágur to board the 09:15 AM ferry to Mykines. Weather permitting, the ferry journey itself offers a remarkable experience as we navigate past the majestic sea stacks of Drangarnir, and the islands of Tindhólmur and Gáshólmur. Upon landing, we’ll make our first stop at the village café for a brief pause and an opportunity to purchase snacks and drinks.

Depending on the day, our hike may begin ascending directly from the village to the memorial stone in memory of local men fallen in the mountains of Mykines or drowned at sea, the first viewpoint. Optionally we might hike the alternate route by venturing through the village before ascending northward. Either way, we will see the famous Faroe Islands puffins and experience the same things, just in a different order. The hike offers a chance to witness not only the Faroe Islands’ largest puffin colony but also to enjoy stunning views of the island, the surrounding sea, and the cliffs towering above the ocean. We typically arrive back at the village in time for some more exploration of the village and the surroundings before catching the ferry back to Sørvágur at 14:00. Arrival time in Tórshavn will be around 16h as we drop you off at your preferred location.

FYI: To reach the village Mykines, we must take the ascent to a level on 30 meters, via stairs. The hike to the puffins nesting area goes up to about 130 meters level.

*Please note, the trail to Lambi and Mykineshólmur is currently closed due to a landslide. However, there’s no need to worry, as the island boasts numerous other spectacular viewpoints and opportunities to observe the puffins.

A note of caution

If the Mykines ferry is canceled due to rough seas, which occurs occasionally, we will hold back 600dkk per person if the cancellation is announced before the tour begins. If the ferry cancels after the tour has commenced refund is not possible and we will arrange an alternative tour to compensate for the sudden change. An alternative tour will always be arranged if the ferry cancels. Booking with us requires that our customers are prepared to accept these conditions and remain adaptable as we will not be able to refund customers in such instances. Furthermore, under certain circumstances, local authorities may restrict access to the puffin colony as a conservation measure. In these instances, your guide will be ready to modify the itinerary as necessary. We expect participants to be flexible to ensure that effective work-arounds can be implemented.

The availability of the puffin tour is contingent upon securing ferry tickets to Mykines. If the ferry is fully booked, we cannot complete the tour and you will receive a full refund.

*Please note pick up times might change depending on availability in the boat.
Please note puffins start leaving the Faroe Islands from mid-August.
